Designer Bookbinders Masterclasses

Designer Bookbinders is delighted to announce the return of its Masterclass series of workshops for 2022. Especially designed for binders at an intermediate or advanced level, these classes aim to explore aspects and structures in bookbinding at greater depth and to a higher level than is sometimes possible in other workshops. To this end each workshop is limited to six places.

Workshops run over a weekend and the course fee for each is £200.

Bursary help is available towards the cost of these workshops and we encourage applications. Contact Pippa Smith, secretary@designerbookbinders.org.uk for details.

2022 MASTERCLASSES

Crossed Structure Binding in Boards
Tutor: Lori Sauer
19 & 20th November 2022 – WORKSHOP OVER
Beechingstoke, Pewsey, SN9 6HJ

Many binders are already familiar with the wonderful Crossed Structure binding introduced in the 90s by Carmencho Arregui, Lori’s Masterclass will incorporate rigid boards into this structure. As with the original Crossed Structure variations, the technique of introducing boards has its own options and a wide choice of materials. Lori often uses this method for her commission work and Booker shortlist bindings, mainly because of its supple opening and opportunities for design.

To accommodate time constraints books will be made from card, heavy paper and cloth; this will give all the information needed to use more sophisticated materials later such as leather, vellum, etc. There will be a strong emphasis on design and its interplay with the structure. Participants must have previous experience making crossed structures and be familiar with its principles.

Lori received a degree in Fine Art in the USA followed by an MA in English Literature. She moved to the UK in the early 1980s, studied bookbinding with Sally Lou Smith and David Sellars and set up her own workshop in the 1990s. Elected as a Fellow of DB in 2001, Lori was DB President from 2015-19. She runs open studio classes throughout the year alongside her programme of international master-classes, BINDING RE:DEFINED and is a frequent Booker shortlist binder.

Double Boards Binding
Tutor: Rachel Ward-Sale
23 & 24 July 2022 – WORKSHOP OVER
The Daffodil Barn, Wiltshire, SN9 5PF

This is a versatile technique for producing a robust binding with separately covered boards. It is ideal for decorating boards using techniques such as impressing or piercing before they are attached to the book. It can also be used to produce bindings with different colours or treatments on the boards and spine.

This practical workshop will cover the processes involved in forwarding and covering a book using the double boards method, including preparation of the text block, choosing materials and preparing them for covering. Students should have experience in forwarding, leather paring and covering. Students may bring a prepared text block and their own materials (details will be provided) or blank book-blocks and materials can be provided at cost price.

Rachel studied Art, Design and Bookbinding at The University of Brighton from 1977-1982. In 2005 she was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, serving as President from 2019-2021. Since leaving college, she has worked as a self-employed bookbinder co-founding Bookbinders of Lewes in 1992. She undertakes a wide variety of projects and commissions as well as teaching bookbinding at her studio and other venues, including West Dean College, Chichester. Rachel’s work is represented in collections around the world including the Getty, Bodleian and British Libraries.
