Welcome to the Designer Bookbinders online 2022 winter exhibition, Gaudium Hora Inceptium (GHI). Gaudium Hora Inceptium is our third online exhibition, following on from ABC (Art Book Craft) and Designs Equals Function (DEF). Once again, this showcases some of the finest work in contemporary bookbinding and book arts in the world today, all produced by the exhibiting members of Designer Bookbinders.
Designing a book is one thing; ensuring it works as a book is another. Hidden under the outer skin of any book is a complex array of materials allied with technical engineering that ensures function. Each element is designed to synergise the text block, the binding and the form of the book without compromising either. In short, the book has to work as a book.
The GHI books are also on exhibition at Maggs Bros Ltd, 48 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3DR until 13 January 2023. Their opening times over the Christmas period are as follows: Open until 23/12/22, re-opening on 3/1/23 (10.00 – 5.00). Opening hours Monday to Friday: 9.30-5.00.
