BIO

Flora was born in 1959 and studied Graphic Arts at City & Guilds of London Art School from 1978 – 1982. She specialised in calligraphy and gained a Certificate and Diploma in Bookbinding and calligraphy from 1982 – 1984.

She did an Advanced Diploma in Bookbinding at Digby Stuart College, Roehampton Institute, from 1984 – 1986. It was whilst Flora was a full- time student at Digby Stuart College that she attended two rare book Restoration Workshops conducted by Bernard Middleton during the holidays. Digby Stuart is now one of the four constituent colleges of the University of Roehampton – Digby Stuart, Froebel, Whitelands & Southlands.

Flora trained part-time under Sally Lou Smith from 1985 – 1986 and it was Lou who taught her gold finishing. From 1986 – 1998 Flora was part-time trainee and assistant to Bernard Middleton, devoted to restoration and period-style rebinding. She also established her own bindery in 1986.

Flora taught part-time at The City Literary Institute, London from 1994 – 1997 and was elected as a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 1990.
