Covered.Discovered Private View Tuesday 12th March 2024

There were books and binders, illuminations and illuminators, and calligraphy and calligraphers galore at the opening of the Covered.Discovered exhibition at the Crafts Council gallery last night!

The exhibition was opened by Sir Charles Saumarez Smith CBE, a British cultural historian specialising in the history of art, design and architecture. He was the Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts in London from 2007 – 2018 and was also previously director of both the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery. Charles is married to Romilly Saumarez Smith who was also at the private view last night. Romilly is a Former Fellow of Designer Bookbinders who took up jewellery after many years of bookbinding.

Don’t miss what is a wonderful collaborative exhibition in the beautiful, spacious and bright space that is the Crafts Council Gallery. We urge you to go along and look in person if you are able: see the books in the round; the textures of the illuminations; the quality of the calligraphers brush strokes on the paper – these are all things that can’t be accurately captured on camera.

The exhibition is on between the 13th March and the 13th April 2024 at the Crafts Council Gallery, 44a Pentonville Road, London, N1 9BY. The gallery will be open from Wednesday through to Saturday (although closed over Easter) between the hours of 11am – 5pm each day and will be invigilated by members of both Designer Bookbinders and the Society of Illuminators and Scribes.

If you can’t make it, you can purchase a fully illustrated catalogue here.
