The Book: Art and Object by Philip Smith

Published 1982 in Merstham
small quarto (300 x 210 x 8mm), 68pages, stiff paper covers

Although the book is a paperback, it is sewn.

A collection of writings by Philip Smith including early articles from DBNL; texts of talks given to various institutions; essays on the development of contemporary binding, the economics of binding, the theory of design and much more. The book is profusely illustrated – not just with Philip’s bindings – in colour and black & white, and with diagrams.

Associate members of Designer Bookbinders were invited to purchase and bind a copy of this book. Completed bindings were exhibited at the Designer Bookbinders AGM in London in 2023. It was not a competition and there were no restrictions on approach, style or materials and it was open to Designer Bookbinders Associate members from anywhere. There was no entry fees and there were no prizes. All we asked is that binders used their creativity and imagination to produce a binding they were happy to show other members.

Although the exhibition has now passed, copies of the book are still available for sale at £5 + postage.
