We are pleased to share images sent to us by Designer Bookbinder Fellow Tom McEwan and Licentiate Gillian Stewart. Both live and work up in Scotland and they were collectively invited along to the Edinburgh University Library to demonstrate some bookbinding techniques back in December, all part of the Designer Bookbinders International Competition Exhibition that is currently on there.
Gillian and Tom spent one day with around 20 students on the 11th of December, which was generously funded by the Library. They each ran a 45 minute demonstration, Gillian’s was on cyanotype printing for bookbinding which linked to her book in the exhibition and Tom gave a great demonstration on edge decoration. This was Gillian’s first ever demonstration and she reported that it was good practice for her!
Following the demonstrations the library then let all the attendees handle books from their collection, including their decorative paper collection, followed by mince pies and tea.
To end the day, Tom and Gillian together ran a workshop making a hardcover single section book. There was a good mix of participants, with total beginners, photographers, book artists, library and University staff and printmakers. Most had previously seen the exhibition and they were encouraged to have another look after binding their own books.
The final leg of the touring exhibition is currently on at the University of Edinburgh from the 4th November through to the 25th February 2023. This is a free exhibition and is open Monday – Friday, 10 am – 5 pm, and is open to all.
