A message from Stuart & Louise Brockman, Organisers of the Designer Bookbinders International Bookbinding Competition:
“We & the Bodleian have been very busy working on planning for the exhibition, the prize giving, designing & making of the Silver prize, editing & proofreading the catalogue, & with organising events associated with the Prize giving.
Oxford is a beautiful city & we proudly look forward to welcoming bookbinders from all over the world to come together for the Prize giving & opening of the Exhibition of “A Gathering of Leaves” in The Weston Library, Broad Street, Oxford – 77 Designer Bindings on the theme of plants, botanicals & gardens will be exhibited to help celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Oxford Botanic Garden. This exhibition showcases work by some of the finest craft hand bookbinders from all over the world.
Emails have been sent to all Prize winners & exhibiting binders. We very much look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in July. We also look forward to welcoming visitors to view the exhibition when it is open between 7 Jul – 11 Sept. The exhibition is then travelling to London, where it will be on display at Sotheby’s at the end of Sept.
Following that, and in a first for the competition, we are delighted to take the exhibition to Scotland from Nov 2022 – Feb 2023 when it will be open to the public at the Main Library Gallery, Edinburgh University, George Square, Edinburgh.
Details of the Festival of Bookbinding are still being finalised, but it will include lectures & practical demonstrations in the lecture theatre at the Weston, along with show & tell demos in the Blackwell Hall & a hands on bookbinding session. We also hope to offer a trade stand where bookbinding materials & equipment will be offered for sale. All events will be open to the public – some will be ticketed – there will be no charge, but we will be asking for donations to help towards costs.
There is a lot to be excited about with all the events associated with the International Competition & we very much look forward to bringing binders, bibliophiles & those interested in the Book Arts together this summer.”
